Rubadubwood Woodturning
Stíofán Ó Mártain & his hairy helpers
I'm a hobby woodturner from Dublin Ireland making hand made woodturned items from home with some help from my hairy helpers Mylo and Snotser. I originally learned the craft while at school. I was lucky enough to have access to lathes, tools and great woodworking tuition as a teenager at Patrician College in Finglas. 20 years later, having not practiced since leaving school I became interested in woodturning again after doing a quick search for woodturning on youtube. I was amazed to see the use of resin, milliput, colour and burning and texturing on woodturned projects as well as the endless possibilities for different items which could be turned.
This access to new ideas from woodturners all over the world via youtube and instagram ( many of whom I've listed on the woodturning links page) re-ignited my passion for turning. The world was a smaller place when I was at school and I could count on one hand the number of woodturners I knew at the time. Now I connect with woodturners all over the world and learn from their techniques, from design to materials use to finishing, the possibilities are endless.
In 2019 I bought a new lathe and start turning again for the first time in 20 years. I still have my tools from my school days and they still serve me well while I add specialised new tools as and when I need them. I make a range of items using a wide variety of techniques. Fruit bowls are finished with food safe oils or waxes. Lamps, clocks, bottle stoppers, stools, coloured and textured artistic pieces, pots and much more are finished in various oils, waxes and lacquers depending whether I go for a high gloss or matt finish.
As for my favourite wood? I love Yew.
